White Sage (Salvia apiana)

White sage Salvia apiana has been used for centuries in the Native American culture. The practices have spread from the native tribes of the southwest to people nationwide. It has a great history in this area and a wonderful fragrance for the home. White sage is from the coastal mountains of southern California and Mexico. This is a broad leaf sage which is prized for its strong aromatic properties. This sage has the strongest scent of all sages worldwide.

How to Burn Sage

Simple as it may appear, there is a proper way to light a wand and smudge an environment.

1) Place the tip of the wand perpendicular to the ground or floor and light the open end with a lighter. Gently blow on the tip of the sage until it begins to smoke. Continue this process until the wand smokes rather vigorously. (Traditional use would be using a smudge feather, as shown to the right). Some may use a hand woven fan instead of blowing if smudge feather is not an option.

2) Start at the front door of the house and pass the smoking wand over the shape of the door, then start to move directly into the next room following either the ceiling or floor layout. Remember to pass the wand over the shape of each window and door as you continue through each room of the house or work space. In order for the ceremony to be most effective, the Sage Wand should cover every room, door and window. The house will become a bit smoky and it is acceptable to open the door and windows to let the smoke out.

3) It is wise to carry a shell during the ceremony to catch any hot cinders to avoid damaging the carpets, furniture and floors. An abalone shell serves this purpose and can then be used as a storage place for any half used wand.

This ceremony should be performed whenever you feel you are surrounded by negative or stale energy. These energies may manifest as inconsistent emotional patterns; projects and goals that become delayed or perhaps fall apart; continuing restless sleep behavior. After a good smudging,

you will notice a calming effect throughout the area that was cleansed. In addition, if you are having disturbing dreams, it is recommended that you smudge frequently in the room where the dreams occur.

Medicinal Properties of Sage

The Native Americans also found that Salvia apiana had medicinal uses. White sage is rich in cineole. Cineole, ingested as tea or inhaled from burning leaves, works to break up mucus, & stimulate clear breathing. It has been used through the ages as a cleanser, both in the body and in the environment. This sacred plant is safe to consume and has been traditionally used to break a fever or reduce sweating, cleaning eyes, post-pregnancy recovery, cold remedies, odor elimination, and much more.

Native American Sacred Beliefs

As a sacred practice, Native Americans would first ask Mother Earth for the sage before taking it, then thank the Earth for providing such a blessing. The sage is then sacredly wrapped together and tied into a bundle. Then the end is lit and after a few moments blown out. The remaining sage smolders like an ember and releases the smoke slowly. This smoke is used to purify people, places and objects. These smudgings clear away negative energies that are present.

Clearing Negativity -

Burning white sage clears negativity by purifying an area of the home or the physical body.

Ensuring Protection

Many people including Native Americans carry a small amount of white sage with them in their pocket or a medicine pouch to ensure physical safety and spiritual protection on their journeys.
